Europe Walking Holiday FAQs
How fit do I need to be for a TD active walking holiday?
The walks throughout should be within the capabilities of anyone in normal good health, who is reasonably fit and is able to climb uphill. It’s your responsibility for assessing your own suitability and capability to fully participate in our walking holidays. Certain activities may be inaccessible to you if your mobility is limited in any way. Please ensure that you have understood the level of fitness and ability required for your chosen holiday.
What should I pack for my guided walking holiday?
No matter what the destination, the weather can always be unpredictable, so prepare for all elements. The best advice for clothing is to wear layers, so pack some long and short sleeved tops as well as long and short trousers. Modern high-tech fabrics for shirts and walking trousers are windproof but also very quick drying, so if you get caught in a shower, or rinse them through at night, they will be dry by morning. Cotton clothing is not recommended, as it will retain sweat and cause friction burns. Hiking pants with convertible zips are ideal if the temperature changes suddenly! It is also advisable to bring a fleece or other warm clothing as temperatures can be cool during early morning starts. A light windbreaker or a waterproof jacket is also highly recommended.
We would also recommend the following items:
- A strong pair of walking boots with good ankle support.
- Double layered socks, as these prevent blisters.
- Walking poles, these should be in your checked in with your baggage
- Sunscreen
- A broad brimmed hat to shade your face from hot sun is very important
- Small first aid kit
What should I take on a hiking trip?
We recommend a lightweight backpack, with capacity of approximately 10-25 litres, to hold your water bottle, extra layers of clothing, a camera, sunscreen and insect repellent and any other personal items you might like to take with you on each walking day. It is also a good idea to take some snacks with you in your back pack such as trail mix or an energy bar.
How should I prepare for my walking holiday?
We strongly suggest you exercise by taking regular treks and undertaking some uphill training in order to get accustomed to the maximum hiking distance on your walking holiday. We also recommend that you undertake some background research about the walking destinations you will be visiting and the type of climate and local conditions you can expect, so as to get the most out of your holiday.
Will someone be transporting our luggage?
Yes, your luggage will be transported on the coach between accommodation whilst you’re hiking. All you need to take is a backpack.
Do we still walk in bad weather?
Rain or shine we will embark on our hike! However, the routes may be altered by the local walking guide if any unexpected or extreme weather conditions are encountered. These decisions are always made with the best intention for the group’s wellbeing.
What is the accommodation like on a walking holiday?
We like to include authentic accommodation on all our tours in order to really experience the local culture and get to the heart of a destination. Our holidays generally stay in locally owned boutique hotels, 3 star hotels, home stays or guesthouses. We occasionally offer 4 star hotels but never a chain hotel or a 5 star luxury hotel.
Can I share a twin room to save on cost if I am travelling by myself?
Yes, we offer two ways to travel, either with your own private room or with our Solo Twin Share rooms, which pair you with a roommate of the same gender.
