Discovering Georgetown’s Old-World Charm
Day in Georgetown: Uncovering Penang’s Heritage and Local Flavor
This morning, we’ll keep breakfast light because we’re diving right into Georgetown’s culinary and cultural treasures. At 8:00 AM, our guide will greet us, and we’ll begin with a visit to one of Georgetown’s oldest and most lively local markets. As we step into this bustling bazaar, we’re greeted by an explosion of sights, sounds, and scents: fresh produce stacked high, inexpensive clothing, and quirky knick-knacks packed into every stall. Our guide will introduce us to the art of haggling—expect a few playful rejections, as it’s all part of the fun!
After sampling some local delicacies, we’ll meander through Georgetown’s narrow streets, where street food stalls tempt us with morning treats like flaky, buttery Roti Canai and frothy, sweet Teh Tarik. If any of these catch our eye, we can let our guide know—we’ll stop to savour a taste of Penang’s famous breakfast flavours.
As we continue, we’ll encounter some of Georgetown’s most beloved landmarks:
- St. George’s Church: This majestic structure, Southeast Asia’s oldest Anglican church, stands as a reminder of Penang’s colonial past, its white facade glimmering in the tropical sun.
- Goddess of Mercy Temple: Built in 1728, Penang’s oldest Taoist temple invites us into its peaceful sanctuary, where incense wafts through the air as devotees make offerings.
- Flower Garland Stalls: We’ll pass colourful stalls with artisans crafting flower garlands by hand, a vivid spectacle of fresh blooms and fragrant petals woven into intricate designs.
- Pinang Peranakan Mansion: This elaborately decorated mansion-turned-museum offers a window into the rich culture of the Peranakan people, whose lives reflect a fascinating blend of Chinese and Malay traditions.
- Little India: Vibrant and energetic, Little India envelops us in the scents of spices and the sounds of Bollywood music drifting from shopfronts.
- Sri Mariamman Temple: Penang’s oldest Hindu temple, this ornate sanctuary showcases elaborate carvings and statues of deities, a testament to the city’s multicultural heritage.
Our last stop is the Khoo Kongsi clan house, one of Malaysia’s most iconic Chinese clan associations. Here, intricate carvings and decorative motifs tell tales of Chinese heritage and craftsmanship, a final flourish to our exploration of Georgetown’s diverse history.
Before we return to our hotel, we’ll experience a nostalgic ride on Penang’s oldest form of transportation—a trishaw. This colourful three-wheeled cycle, once Georgetown’s only means of getting around, offers a leisurely journey through the city’s charming streets.
After an exhilarating morning, we’ll return to our hotel in the afternoon for a well-deserved rest.

Journey to the Highlands – Penang to Cameron Highlands
Escape to the Cameron Highlands: A Journey Through History and Nature
After a leisurely breakfast at our hotel, we’ll depart at 11:00 AM, crossing the iconic Penang Bridge and leaving the island behind. Our journey south takes us to the scenic Perak State, where we’ll wind through the lush landscape of Simpang Pulai and ascend to the cooler, mist-kissed Cameron Highlands.
The history of Cameron Highlands adds a touch of romance to this lush destination. Discovered by British surveyor William Cameron in 1885, the highlands remained hidden for years before Sir George Maxwell’s 1925 visit sparked plans to transform this tranquil plateau into a hill station retreat. With determination and manual labour, the winding road we travel today was carved into the mountains, opening up this beautiful sanctuary to visitors.
Afternoon Tea at The Lakehouse
We’ll arrive in Ringlet, a charming town nestled in the highlands, where we’ll enjoy a classic afternoon tea at The Lakehouse. This enchanting setting, with its cosy English-style charm, is the perfect place to sip tea and take in the serene lakeside views.
From there, we’ll transfer to our accommodation at the Strawberry Park Resort, where the crisp mountain air invites us to unwind and relax. With the evening free, we can explore the resort’s lovely surroundings or simply enjoy the cool, refreshing climate—ideal for a leisurely stroll or a cosy night in with a light sweater.
Nature’s Playground – Exploring the Mossy Forest and Tea Plantations
Mossy Forest
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, get ready for a day packed with exploration and awe-inspiring scenery. At 8:30 AM, our 4x4 vehicle will pick us up, whisking us away for a journey into the heart of Cameron Highlands. We’ll wind through lush, rolling tea plantations as we ascend to Gunung Brinchang—6,666 feet above sea level—the highest mountain accessible by road in Southeast Asia.
As we make our way up, our guide will share stories and fascinating insights on Malaysia’s famous tea industry, accompanied by stunning panoramic views of the tea gardens. On clear days, we’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas stretching across the highlands.
Our adventure continues with an interpretive walk led by a knowledgeable nature guide through the enchanting Mossy Forest. This ancient forest, with its dense canopy, is home to a fascinating array of flora: from the rare Pitcher plants and delicate orchids to primitive ferns, medicinal plants, and exotic spices. Wandering through this surreal, moss-covered wonderland is like stepping into a storybook, where mist lingers in the air and every turn reveals a new natural treasure.
Local tea plantation
Afterwards, we’ll descend to a local tea plantation, where we’ll dive into the rich heritage of tea-making. Learn about the different varieties and flavours of tea, and gain a new appreciation for this age-old craft with a behind-the-scenes tour of the tea factory.
Trek through the ancient rainforests of the Titiwangsa Range
Following lunch at your leisure, we’ll continue our adventure with a guided trek through the dense, ancient rainforests of the Titiwangsa Range. Spanning hundreds of peaks, this 130-million-year-old montane rainforest is known for its rich ecosystem and incredible biodiversity. As we trek deeper, our guide will point out precious medicinal plants, native wildlife, and the unique balance of life within this untouched habitat.
After an exhilarating day of exploring, we’ll return to the hotel in the evening. Here, you can relax and soak in the refreshing mountain air, a light sweater is recommended to keep you cosy in the cool highland breeze.
